Never Give up-My Life with Schizencephaly

Hi, I’m Shaelyn Wheeler. I was diagnosed with Schizencephaly resulting in Cerebral Palsy at 15 months old. When I was young doctors said there was a chance that I would not be able to do things like learning how to walk or talk. I proved these doctors wrong and have accomplished many milestones. During my life I have used multiple walkers and wore many orthotics to help me walk. With the assistance of a cane or walker, I am able to walk. I even learned to talk using communication devices. I started with a device that held only a few words. Later, when my family and school figured out I had so much more to say, my vocabulary grew and my devices evolved. Though it may take me longer to speak, I prefer typing everything and fully communicate using Proloquo4Text and love it!

Despite all these odds, I’m now a student at a local community college. My classes and my professors are great. My professors have been accepting of my accommodations and are sure to check in and make sure I feel included. I look forward to getting a degree.

Always remember: Never Give Up! CP warrior strong! 💚
