Finding My Wings

My name is Ally. I live with CP, and you may wonder who I am, but this is my story. I was born with CP due to a birth injury. Now, I realize that CP is only one piece of me; there is so much more to me than that. I couldn’t talk until I was three years old, and with the help and love of my parents, I am grateful for the progress I have made because of them. Now I never stop talking. I love art, music, and being creative. You may wonder about the story behind my title, and indeed, there is a story. I live in a center for people with disabilities. In order to be a resident, you must work toward goals within each discipline. I work with speech therapists, physical therapists, educators, and occupational therapists all year round.
This past year, I collaborated with Occupational Therapy and Education to create a children’s book called A Brave and Beautiful Butterfly for my niece. I created the illustrations with the help of my favorite occupational therapist by painting, which I discovered I love. I also wrote the story with my teacher from the Education Department. Since getting my book published, I have used it as a platform to teach others about CP. This experience has given me opportunities to read my book, use my voice to spread awareness, and feel more confident while visiting schools and participating in staff in-services. Soon, I will be reading my book to welcome guests at an inclusion fair as part of their Disability Week. I am currently working on a second book with my team, inspired by my speech therapist and my growth in finding my voice through song.

There’s no telling where my wings will take me in the future, but I know my journey is not over. All you need is love, courage, determination, and perseverance. Always remain hopeful and never give up. I wish you the best of luck in finding your wings.
